Gathering Time
During this time the children go to their assigned rooms and sit down as a group. A typical gathering time lead by an instructor will cover the following activities:
-
Children greet each other by name and recognize their emotions. (Kindness, Social and Emotional development)
-
Sing-a-song (Emotional and Language development)
-
Listen to a story (Early Literacy development)
-
Introduce the concept of the day (For example, the periodic element of the day, what the current day, month, and season is, or a special word of the day).
Have a meeting regarding the projects, activities, and plan of the day. The teacher will help to facilitate the discussion by webbing what the children discuss as the the first phase of a project approach study.
Project Time
The children are able to pick the project they wish to participate in from their earlier discussion and break out into smaller groups to engage in their S.T.E.A.M. project. During this time they are facilitated by a teacher. Typically the children are divided into groups of 6 children or less. On any given day, there are multiple projects for the children to engage in. The projects children find interest in are continued over an extended period of time from a few days to multiple weeks depending on level of interest and engagement from the children.
